Some 40 years ago, President Lyndon Johnson declared the War on Poverty. He urged Americans to come to the rescue of those who lived “on the outskirts of hope.” Yet poverty persists, deeply, seemingly intractably, and often hidden from mainstream America. In this, the richest of lands, far too many families regularly do without healthy food, adequate housing, and affordable healthcare.
